ENGLISH SUMMARY
My artistic practice explores social taboos where sensitive topics, which often remain unsaid, are given a theatrical expression. Fear, shame, and loneliness are words that inspire me in my research and exploration, and my interest is how these words manifest in our bodies and our systems. Alone, and in the encounter with society. My attention to fear, shame, and loneliness comes from my exploration of my own body and system, as a result of trauma in my childhood. This experience has set a course for my practice and exploration today.
The narrative comes to me first and goes on in exploration in the form of drawing and movement. The language of movement is often detailed and intense, and I find it exciting to challenge the performer's physique and the energy between the performer and the observer. I like to have the audience close to create an experience of, or an essence of, that we stand in this together. This could be any of us. My overall interest is to raise awareness, create reflection and conversations. About the things, we as a society choose to turn our blind eye to.
I was born and raised in Øksnes in Vesterålen, Northern Norway. I trained at the School for new dance (Skolen for samtidsdans) in Oslo, and have since I graduated in 2010 worked as a freelance dance artist. Today I work as a dancer and choreographer mainly with my own projects as Thomas of Norway. My works vary from smaller to larger formats and are mainly solo works.
Between 2013 - 2016 I choreographed the autobiography and trilogy Human Constant. It consists of Picture Perfect (2014), No Visibility (2015), and When Boys Cry (2016). The performances explores, in different ways, symptoms of trauma. In 2017 the duet and performance Until We Meet Again premiered, featuring a 12-year-old dancer. In 2019, You Might Like Me Better If We Sleep Together was presented for the first time. In my portfolio, you can see an overview of my productions and works up to now.
In the winter of 2016, I established Aorta Dansekompani which is an arena for young dancers in the age group 8-18. The company is workshop-based and is based in Lofoten in collaboration with Lofoten kulturhus in Svolvær. Aorta is both a creative platform for young dancers and part of my artistic practice. The goal of Aorta is to create an arena where each dancer can explore their potential regardless of experience, and each performance by the company is created in close collaboration with the dancers. In 2017, one of the dancers from the company was one of the performers on stage in Until We Meet Againby Thomas of Norway. Until We Meet Again is a duet about child neglect and when the roles child-adult have switched place in everyday life. In the late autumn of 2020, I established Scenekunst LOVE. This is a platform for performing arts professionals in Lofoten and Vesterålen, and the goal is to strengthen unity and to gather all these fantastic talents in one place on a common digital platform. Through this, we want to contribute to more collaboration across disciplines / www.scenekunstlove.no
My heart is in the north, and this is also where I have my base. Closer to home, in Hadsel in Vesterålen surrounded by magnificent nature and the powerful Arctic ocean.

Lystekniker & lysdesigner

Lucjan er lysdesigner og lystekniker med base i Svolvær. Han har lang og bred erfaring fra bransjen og har blant annet jobbet som teknisk sjef ved Lofoten kulturhus. Golas har også vært engasjert ved fleste festivaler, som Festspillene i Nord-Norge, Parken i Bodø og Nordland Musikkfestuke, og har samarbeidet med blant annet Wiener Staatsballett og Halvdan Sivertsen.
Lucjan har designet lys for en rekke av Thomas of Norway produksjoner gjennom flere år.
IDA LØKEN VALKEAPAA
Skuespiller & scenekunstner

Ida Løken Valkeapää er skuespiller og scenekunstner med base i Tromsø og en stor kjærlighet til Nord-Norge. Hun er vokst opp i Oslo, utdannet ved Teaterhögskolan i Helsingfors og HB Studio i New York, og har jobbet som frilans skuespiller siden 2001. Hun har vært tilknyttet nærmere 15 institusjonsteatre i Finland, Sverige og Norge i tillegg til ulike frigruppeprosjekt og film og TV, og var også med å grunnlegge den nordiske teatergruppa Subfrau. De siste årene har Ida i tillegg utviklet egne forestillinger hun beskriver som "fortellerkonserter", i samarbeid med diverse musikere.
Thomas of Norway og Ida startet høsten 2021 et kunstnerisk samarbeid omkring tematikken vold i nære relasjoner.

Ellinor er danser og har en MA i Expanded Dance Practice fra The Place i London. Ellinor er fra Steigen i Nordland og jobber som frilans dansekunstner. I tillegg til egen kunstnerisk praksis, er Ellinor nestleder i Forum for nordnorske dansekunstnere.
Ellinor er medskapende dansekunstner i forestillingen Holding Position.
ØYSTEIN VOLL
Kunsthistoriker, skribent & produsent

Øystein har mastergrad i kunsthistorie fra UiO og NTNU. Han har mange års erfaring som formidler i Den kulturelle skolesekken med produksjoner fra Nasjonalmuseet, Kunstmuseet NordTrøndelag, Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum og LIAF. Han er forfatter og skribent, og skriver blant annet utstillingstekster og kunstnerportretter. Som kunstkritiker skriver han for hakapik.no og Se Kunst Magasin. Voll har erfaring som produsent og inspisient for scenekunstproduksjoner i Lofoten og Vesterålen.
Øystein har skrevet tekstene på denne nettsiden, vært produsent/assistent og dokumentert flere av Thomas of Norway produksjoner siden 2010.

Tine er komponist og bosatt på Flakstad i Lofoten. Tine er utdannet fra Norges Musikkhøgskole, The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, Sonic College (Danmark) og Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium i København, og har komponert lyd til forestillingene Until We Meet Again, You Might Like Me Better If We Sleep Together og Holding Position / Then, You Left.

Dramapedagog & dramaturg

Mette er dramaturg og bosatt i Stamsund, Lofoten. Hun er utdannet fra Høyskolen i Volda (drama) og Høyskolen i Oslo (drama og teater).
Mette har jobbet som dramaturg i prosjektene You Might Like Me Better If We Sleep Together og Holding Position.
LINDA BIRKEDAL
Koreograf, danser & produsent

Linda Birkedal er utdannet dansekunstner og produsent fra London, København, Stockholm, Stavanger og Trondheim. Etter utdanning har Birkedal jobbet som danser, koreograf, pedagog og produsent. Hun grunnla kompaniet Molitrix Scenekunst (MoS) i 1999, og har gjennom MoS produsert forestillinger, performances, installasjoner og dansefilmer lokalt, nasjonalt og internasjonalt.
Linda var produsent for Thomas of Norway gjennom produsentstøtte hos Dansearena nord i perioden mai 2020 - mai 2021, har ledet kunstnersamtale i forbindelse med forestillingen When Boys Cry, og har vært - og er - en god og viktig støttespiller for Thomas of Norway.
KRISTIN RISAN
Formidler

Kristin Lovise Smalås Risan kommer fra Smalåsen i Namsskogan kommune og tok lærerutdanning på Levanger. Fra 1997 til 2021 jobbet Risan som kunstformidler ved Nordnorsk Kunstnersenter, med hele Nord-Norge som arbeidsområde. I sitt arbeid har hun møtt over 100.000 barn og samarbeidet med minst 200 kunstnere om rundt 600 store og små formidlingsproduksjoner i disse årene.
Risan har mottatt kongens fortjenstmedalje og kulturpris fra både Nordland Fylke og Vågan kommune for dette arbeidet. Kristin samarbeider med Thomas of Norway som moderator for kunstnersamtale under Vinterlysfestivalen 2023.
