Body pressure, boundaries, and identity are common markers when Thomas of Norway and Martijn Joling (NL) invite you to an all-night dance event in Lofoten kulturhus. In their own ways, the two choreographers explore how society's and the individual´s boundaries are constantly being pushed. Especially regarding the battle for attention, likes and how to deal with sex.

What role models and what expectations do young people have, as they approach adulthood? Is there a match between what they envision and what they experience? Are they presented with reality in all the glossy posts on social media, or do they choke on the booze when they finally are old enough to go partying?

The two choreographers are moving in the same thematic landscape, but their expressions are completely different. The two solo performances reflects and ask questions in their own way about the dark paths young people and adults have to deal with.

Thomas of Norway and Martijn Joling met for the first time at the talent program Creative Lab (2021-2022) by CODA Oslo International Dance Festival. Double Bill is their first collaborative project.

TRIBUTE TO ME

Tribute To Me by Martijn Joling is a rough comment on a rough reality - a reality that often unfolds in digital spaces. The performance questions the digital reality in which many young people pose, present themselves, and promote themselves in. A reality where it is presented as if - or even expected - that they offer everything. But what is left when the screen turns black?

I can get what I want. If I give you what you want is not just an empty phrase when girls and boys unfold on the digital stage. But where does this urge to uncritically show themselves off come from? Is it about being bored? Not just an hour or a day, but in life itself? Is it about narcissism, which is nourished by the fact that whoever looks at himself in the digital mirrors knows that there are multitudes of people behind the mirror who can see and hear what he is doing? Or is it a need to be seen, to be loved, or to find belonging?

Applause in the shape of hearts and likes gives a kick. Then she can continue to show herself off in the pursuit of admiration and being perfect...

Did you look at me? Really?

MARTIJN
JOLING

Martijn Joling (b.1991, The Netherlands) started off his career as a Dutch rapper, and discovered his love for dance through hip hop. After getting familiar with hiphop as rap and dance style, he switched his focus to contemporary dance/ performance art, studied creative & cultural performance at the Roc Amsterdam dance Academy, and graduated with a BA of Modern Theatre Dance from Amsterdam University of the Arts.

His multidisciplinary backgrounds as a performer are reflected in his choreographic work, which often interact with a variety of different media, including scenography installations, film, live music and poetry. In 2022 he created the two full length works ‘’Clean Bastards’’ & ‘’Tribute to me’’, and in 2023, a remake of "Bak lukkede dører" comissioned by DKS Viken/Akershus. His choreographic work has mainly been presented in Norway and Germany.

YOU MIGHT LIKE ME BETTER IF WE SLEEP TOGETHER

In the performance You Might Like Me Better If We Sleep Together, Thomas of Norway has worked with concepts such as #MeToo, "the meat market" and dickpics. The audience gets a glimpse into a world that cultivates the perfect body, where the pursuit of attention, confirmation and sex is more important than anything else. In the performance, the audience enter a nightclub; a colourful, glossy and fun place with pulsating lights, bare skin, and fierce rhythms. The audience is drawn into a suggestive atmosphere, but quickly encounters the repulsive side of clubbing. Soon the party turns, and it all looks like a bad dream.

When does a hand on the thigh from someone you hardly know, go from being an innocent flirt to being experienced as harassment? Why do we dress sexy to attract attention, then label the person who gives in to temptation as an asshole? And how do we maneuver these physical experiences in an increasingly digitized reality?

The performance is a comment on how far someone is willing to push their own and other people's limits.

Who are you in the middle of this?
